Task description

Dear Year 7s,

Please find attached Independent Learning Task for this week. Here are some instructions to follow:

  • Operation: Brain Switch-On
    Before starting, gently tap your brain and say, “Activate maths mode!” (If it replies, take a break.)

  • The Pencil of Power
    Choose your sharpest pencil. Tell it, “We ride at dawn,” and begin your work heroically.

  • The Average Ninja Rule
    Every time you finish a question, do a tiny victory pose like a secret ninja. No one has to know.

  • The Distraction Detector
    If you get distracted, point dramatically at the nearest object and shout, “Not today, chaos!” Then continue calmly.

  • Show Your Working… Like a Superstar
    When you finish, give your page a slow nod and whisper, “You’re welcome, world,” before handing it in.

📘 Year 7 Interactive Independent Learning (1 Hour)

Topic: Mean, Median, Mode & Range
Estimated Time: 60 minutes
Resources: Pencil, paper, and an optional calculator

🌟 Part 1: Warm-Up Starter (10 minutes)

Task A: Quick Definitions Match

Match each term to the correct definition. Write down the pairs.

  1. Mean

  2. Median

  3. Mode

  4. Range

A. The number that appears most often
B. The difference between the largest and smallest values
C. The average (add all numbers, divide by how many)
D. The middle value when numbers are listed in ascending order

🧩 Part 2: The Snack Shop Survey (25 minutes)

The school snack shop recorded how many items students bought during break on Monday.

Data set (items bought per student):
4, 2, 3, 5, 3, 1, 4, 6, 3, 2

Task B: Organise the Data (5 minutes)

  1. Write the numbers in ascending order.

  2. Count how many numbers there are (n = ?).

Task C: Find the Averages (15 minutes)

Using your ordered list, calculate:
7. Mode: Which number appears most often?
8. Median: If n is even, find the mean of the two middle numbers.
9. Mean:

  • Add all the numbers

  • Divide by n

  • Show your working

  1. Range: Highest number − lowest number

Task D: Self-Check (5 minutes)

Check your answers using these clues:

  • The mode is one of the smaller numbers.

  • The median is between 3 and 4.

  • The mean is also between 3 and 4.

  • The range is more than 4.

If an answer doesn’t match the clues, review and correct it.

🎮 Part 3: Build Your Own Data Set (15 minutes)

Create a list of 10 numbers showing how many minutes you spend on homework each weekday.

Task E: Create & Calculate

  1. Write your 10 numbers.

  2. Put them in ascending order.

  3. Calculate:

  • Mean

  • Median

  • Mode (if there is one)

  • Range

🏆 Part 4: Challenge Extension (10 minutes)

Your friend claims: “If you change one number in a data set, the mean always changes.”

Task F: Investigate

  1. Create a new set of 5 numbers.

  2. Change one of the numbers.

  3. Check whether the mean changes.

  4. Write a short explanation: Is your friend always right?

🏆 Part 4: Challenge Extension (10 minutes)

Create an educational poster explaining mean, median, mode, and range.

Your poster must include:
18. A definition of each term
19. An example showing how to calculate each measure
20. Helpful visuals or diagrams
21. A real-life situation where each measure could be used

Make your poster clear, colourful, and easy for another student to understand.
