Term 2, week 1 - Maths
Dear Year 7s,
Please find attached tasks you must complete on the topic ‘Place Values, Integers and Decimals’. Here are some instructions for you to follow:
-
Show your working – even if your working shows you slowly losing hope.
-
No copying – unless you’re copying your own genius ideas. Then carry on.
-
Use a calculator wisely – it’s a tool, not a magic wish-granting device.
-
Check your answers – If your answer is 1,000,000 and the question was “what’s 2 + 2?”, something has gone terribly wrong.
Hand in on time – the bin monster gets grumpy when he has to eat late homework. Due date 10/11/2025.
-
All the best!
Task 1 – Writing and Representing Numbers
-
Write three different numbers in both words and figures (include at least one number with 6 digits).
-
Explain how you know the value of each digit in one of your numbers.
-
Use a place value chart to represent one of your numbers.
Task 2 – Ordering and Comparing
-
Create a list of at least five numbers between 4,000 and 5,000.
-
Arrange them in ascending order and then in descending order.
-
Explain how you decided which number was greater or smaller.
Task 3 – Working with Decimals
-
Write four decimal numbers that include tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.
-
Show how to round each number to one and two decimal places.
-
Explain what happens to a number when it is rounded up or down.
Task 4 – Identifying Digit Values
-
Choose any three numbers (they can include decimals).
-
For each number, identify the place value and value of one chosen digit.
(Example: In 5,308, the 3 is in the hundreds place and has a value of 300.) -
Explain why the same digit can represent different values in different numbers.
Task 5 – Challenge (For Stretch)
-
Use the digits 3, 5, 7, and 8 to make:
-
The largest 4-digit number possible.
-
The smallest 4-digit number possible.
-
Find the difference between your two numbers.
-
Explain how you used place value knowledge to decide their order.
